As stated in the mission statement, the goals of The Mihdi Joon Fund are manifold. First and foremost, is the need to raise the funds to provide for the care, treatment and support of Mihdi Brock himself. This is the first phase of the Fund's development, and it will remain an important focus as the Fund develops and moves forward for Mihdi's treatment and need for support will be ongoing until he is in his late teens at least. His need for financial support in order to obtain both traditional Chinese and traditional Western medical treatments spurred the formation of the Fund.
There have been innumerable challenges during these past number of years. Securing the regular and dependable funding required to maintain this first objective of the MJF has been challenging. We have, though, been successful through the support of many donors, in particular the people of Bermuda at large in maintaining his uninterrupted treatment plan. This includes daily Oriental medical procedures of acupuncture, manipulation and Qi Gong, as well as herbal prescriptions that he takes three times each day and physical therapies that are carried out every 5 to 10 minutes. Mihdi has made a remarkable amount of progress over the years, and while his treatment must still continue for a minimum of another 7 to 9 years, the results of all the work and effort are visible, encouraging, and deeply moving to all who have followed him over the years.
There have, however, been frequent episodes of financial crisis when a shortfall of funds has threatened to put his treatment requirements in jeopardy. Such a situation is very dangerous for Mihdi as his treatments help him hold ground, and make headway little by little. Should he not be able to remain in constant, continuous treatment and therapy, he would lose ground very quickly and his life would be imperilled. Even a common cold that few of us overly worry about can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation for him. Therefore, vigilance and consistency of treatments must be maintained, which means that it is imperative to increase the fundraising efforts.
At this point, the Fund is evolving into the second phase and providing not only for Mihdi's needs, but beginning to work on educating the public about the benefits of Oriental medicine and how it can complement traditional Western medicine. Literature directed towards that goal can be found for download on the "Literature & Articles" page of this site. An endowment supporting others who are in need of Oriental medical treatments for their conditions but who do not have the financial resources to pay for them will be developed as the third phase so that no other person will have to go through what Mihdi and his family have had to experience.
